Statistical Anomalies - CHAPTER 1

The Voice is constantly trying to come up with new and exciting as well as thought provoking subjects to discuss. Today we will try something new - Statistical Anomalies. Here are a few to for us to chew on, lets see what comes out on the other side...

1 - The Islanders goal differential stands at ***drum roll*** -22. That is by far and away the worst of any of the teams within striking distance of the playoffs other than the Atlanta Thrashers who are at a -32. What does this mean? It means when you win you don't win by a lot but when you lose you lose by a lot. I am still trying to figure out what else it could mean.

2 - New York Islanders current goals for is at 154 which is the second lowest in the NHL. Our brethren from across the rivers' current goals for - 157. I guess the Islanders spend their money more responsibly then those who shall remain nameless.

3 - New Jersey Devils. They are currently one point from the Ottawa Senators for first overall in the conference. Ottawa has slowed their roll that is for sure and the Devils just keep on trucking along as perennial contenders in the East. As long as Mr. Brodeur is around, this is not going to change no matter how many players the Devils lose to free agency. Another one concerning the Devils is the Islanders are 5-0 against them this year.

4 - Hooray to Daniel Carcillo. I can hear the crickets now. Who in the heck is Daniel Carcillo? He is a Phoenix Coyotes forward. Still drawing a blank? He is currently tops in the NHL in Penalty Minutes at 236. Nice to know there are still guys around that can amass crazy amounts of penalty minutes. Reminds me of the days of Mick Vukota, Ken Baumgartner, Chris Nilan, Dave Semenko, Nick Fotiu, Gary Howatt, Bob Probert, Brian Curran, Joe Kocur... I could name names all day.

5 - Alexander Ovechkin. The guy is a streaking, skating, zipping, shooting amazing to watch statistical anomaly. 48 goals in 61 games? Here is your next 60.. maybe 70 goal scorer.

I hope everyone enjoyed this new feature on the voice. As always, be sure and be sure your voice is heard here!!

And nice to know Martinek kept Ovechkin from 49 and 50. And how about Bergie-boy? No stats for him? Since, uh... he's at least an Islander. he he he he....

It all boils down to the netminder. DP just gives up too many soft goals, is out of position on rebounds, & has a slow reaction time when he looses sight of the puck. I would trade him in a minute to get a Hossa & sign a guy like Dan Ellis, who has a great record as a backup & given the chance to play every day, would do fine.
Even with the recent winning streak, the Isles are below 500 for the last 20 games, no good if you are trying to make the play-offs. I do not realistically see them getting in, now that Buffalo is getting on track & the much improved Bruins are in the mix.

DiPietro is whats' wrong with this team. Does anyone remember Mr. softee? DP is the 'Clapper' because he keeps falling & he can't get up!!

hey nyi fan in case you didn't notice ... Luongo...a player who was not good enough to play for the isles just won his 4th straight game

Frank, in regards to Carcillo...you need to keep track of our boys bruising it down in Bridgeport...

Kip Brennan: 44 GP, 230 PIM
Matt Spiller: 58 GP, 164 PIM
Drew Fata: 50 GP, 156 PIM
(to an extent) Pascal Mornecy: 18 GP, 78 PIM

That's pretty impressive nonetheless, especially for a team that was the least penalized last season

Loungo was a Milbury casualty, Mad Mike ruined this team in his tenure. All the draft picks we had in the time he was in charge were wasted in his inability to manage. So, Anonymous, 4 straight wins? Hell, DP just had 6 straight wins, but that was after 7 straight losses!! What is your point?
Lets all hope Garth Snow does not trade away the closest thing we have to a real pure goal scorer we have in Satan. Realistically, with less than 20 games to go, we cannot make the playoffs with the amount of goals we score, DP, All Star or no All Star, cannot win the close game on a regular basis.

Sorry D There is nothing odd about Bergie's ststs. I like the kid too but he has improvements and consistency problems to work on.

Hey Tom, I was talking about the NHL. The AHL is your jurisdiction... I was surprised by how many minutes Fata has...

I am so sick and tired of people just lauding Roberto Luongo. Vancouver is a good team and Luongo is a very good goaltender. But Patrick Roy he is not. There is a long way between Luongo and Martin Brodeur that is for sure. If stats are so telling, well then is anyone going to tell me that Ty Conklin is the best goalie in the NHL because his save % is tops in the league? And another thing, why are people still bringing up Milbury? Yes we all know he screwed up the team and a lot of his moves turned to excrement but this is a different time and a different league. Its time to stop looking back and look forward.

Sorry D.. maybe should I have brought up Blake's 11 goals but I do not consider that an anomaly. The guy had 2 great seasons and has always been a glorified 20 goal scorer so he is right on track. Maybe I should have mentioned Bergie... being your new boy has 4 less goals than #55 and has shown great improvement in his game over the last few weeks.

The Islander's should go after Eric Nystrom, now! The Flames have sent him back down to the farm team. Now would be the time to go after him. Again, as I have stated before; With the help of his Father, playing for his favorite team, in the area he grew up in would do very well for Eric. Another "Big Young Power Forward" would be a nice step in the right direction, for the Islander's. They should also try and bring, as I haqve said in the past, Robert Nilsson back. He was not given enough time here, in time I believe Robert would bring the speed and skill leval the Islander's could really use. As I have also spoken, the Islander's should do everything in their power, with the exception of, letting, Kyle Okposo go, bring M. Hossa to the NY Islander's. Finally, I hope fct your pushing the Classic White jersey of 1980, with the pants with the stripeing, and the original colors, to be next years Third uniform. Thanks fct, Mark

$6 million a year for 4 years is that too much for Campbell ...seeing what phnuff and boyle got this year I don't think so ....If the isles get this player they will have a great puck moving d man that they can look to for years to come and with ko comming up next year ...how awesome would the power play be....this is the biggest blue chip out there this off season and the one player that they need to pony up the dough for ...by the way if they isles don't trade satan by 3pm today they are crazy!!!

Hi Mark, its no secret I have neevr been a fan of Robert Nilsson. I do not know enough about Nystrom's game to know wether he could be a player in the NHL. The Flames are one of he elite teams in the NHL maybe he woul do better in the Islanders system.
